Hot Apple Cider Recipe

My favorite time of year is finally here!  It takes a little longer for Fall to arrive here in Central California so I am so excited to take it all in and enjoy everything about this season.  One of my favorite Fall traditions is making Hot Apple Cider.  I find comfort in sitting with friends and family and holding a warm cup of delicious cider.  I also love making it myself.  This recipe is quick and easy and will fill your home with the scents of Fall.  Enjoy!

What you need:
One liter of all natural, no sugar added Apple Juice
2 Cinnamon Sticks
2 whole Cloves
2 tbsp. Brown Sugar
1 Orange sliced thinly

What to do:
Simply add all ingredients to a sauce pan and bring to a boil.  Boil for 1-2 minutes and turn heat to a slow simmer for 20 minutes.  Pour into glasses and garnish with a cinnamon stick or slice of orange and enjoy!

Grilled Honey Shrimp

I love to cook and create new recipes to share with family and friends.  This Grilled Honey Shrimp recipe is perfect for warm weather.  I have used a grill outside, or in this case, I’m using a grill pan on the stove top…either way, this dish is delish!  The honey adds a nice sweetness to the shrimp and the red chili pepper flakes add just enough heat to keep things interesting.  These shrimp are perfect on a salad or as the main course with fresh fruit and veggies.  It is super easy and super fast, cooking time is less than 5 minutes!  I hope you enjoy.

Grilled Honey Shrimp

What you need:
One pound of raw, cleaned shrimp
Honey
1 tablespoon Red Chili Pepper Flakes
1 tablespoon Olive Oil
Salt and Pepper to taste
Skewers

Get Started!
In a bowl, stir together  Raw Shrimp, 1 tablespoon Red Chili Pepper Flakes, 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil and a pinch of Salt and Pepper.  Simply stir so that all the shrimp are coated with all of the seasonings.  If you like a more mild flavor, eliminate the chili pepper flakes, or only add half the amount :).

Next…
Thread the raw shrimp onto skewers.  I use metal skewers because you can wash and reuse them.  If you are using bamboo skewers, be sure to soak them in water for 30 minutes before you use them so they don’t burn on the hot stove and ruin your dinner!  1 pound of shrimp will make about 8-10 skewers.

Get Cooking!
Heat a grill pan on high for several minutes before placing skewered shrimp on pan.  Cook for 1 minute.  After 1 minute drizzle honey over each skewer and cook for an additional minute.  The shrimp will begin to change from gray to pink.  Flip shrimp and repeat, cook for 1 minute, drizzle with honey, cook for an additional 1 minute.  And that, my friend, is it!

Dig In!
That is all it takes to make this delicious and tasty recipe.  I told you it was quick and easy!  I would pair this with a fresh green salad for a light lunch, or make it the main course by adding veggies, fruit and bread.  No matter how you serve it, you will love it!

Could You Be Carrying More Than Just Groceries?

As most of you know, I am a big fan of the reuseable grocery bag.  I have blogged before about the many wonders of saying no to plastic and carrying a reuseable tote for trips to the grocery store (see past blog here).  I even keep my stash of bags in my trunk so that I’m never without them!

I might be a little late with this news, but I was shocked to hear that a new study out by The American Chemistry Council shows that our reuseable grocery bags are hosts to many forms of bacteria and microbes!  Researchers for this study took reuseable totes from shoppers as they entered the grocery store for testing.  The study showed that all of the bags had some form of microbial growth and that 12% tested positive for E.coli.  This bacterial growth can cross-contaminate the food that we put into these bags.  I’m not sure about you, but this creeped me out!

There is great news though.  This bacteria can be eliminated with a simple washing in the machine.  Using laundry soap to wash the bags and hanging them up to dry rids the bags of all detectable microbial growth…what a relief!  You better believe that I immediately washed all of my bags and hung them up to dry.  An article I read in Better Homes and Gardens August 2010 suggested that you wash your bags every other trip to the grocery store and you should also designate a bag for produce and one for meats, just as you do to cutting boards in the kitchen.

My freshly washed and bacteria-free bags hanging up to dry!
*Just a side note:  washing these bags in the machine does not change their shape at all.  I was worried about that :).

Oh, Honey…Tighten Up! Honey Mask

As always, I have a vlog or, if you prefer to read, I have included text and pictures below.  Thanks for stopping by :).

I am always on the lookout for fun and easy beauty treatments and this awesome mask is the easiest I have ever come across.  It only has one ingredient: honey!  I know that all of you have honey in your kitchen cupboard and if for some reason you don’t, you can pick it up at the grocery store for around $3.  Honey is an amazing natural sweetner.  I like to put honey on my grapefruit, on cooked shrimp and salmon (recipes coming soon) and in tea and any other food that needs a little sweetner added.  Honey is a single ingredient, all natural product, so I love it.  Honey as a beauty treatment is a new concept to me.  I’ve done a little research and this is what I have found so far.

  • It’s a natural humectant, which means it seals in moisture.
  • Honey tightens pores in the skin.
  • It is one of natures best antibacterials.
  • It calms acne and breakouts.
  • Honey brightens and energizes the skin.
  • And it can, over time, lighten and eliminate scars.

So, now that we have all the benefits down, let’s get started on this super easy mask…
bee ready to bee amazed! (hehe).
Oh, Honey…Tighten Up!
(I love this name, and I thought of it all by myself!)

Grab any old honey that you have in your kitchen cupboard.  If you don’t have any honey at home and need to purchase, I would go for organic honey.  It costs the same as regular honey and is more “natural”.   This mask is so easy, you might think it’s too good to be true

Step 1:  Wash and pat dry your face.

Step 2:  Put a few tablespoons of honey onto your finger tips.

Step 3:  Rub the honey onto your face using an upward motion.  Ensure that you are spreading a thin film on your entire face.  (Please forgive me, I have no makeup on!).  Avoid your eye area, honey is your eyes is a sticky situation!  If you get any in your mouth, no worries, its like a built in snack!

Step 4:  Kick up your feet and relax for 15 minutes!

Step 5:  Rinse off with warm water and follow with a mild facial cleaner to remove all of the honey.

Step 6:  Enjoy you newly tightened skin and rave to your friends about the natural beauty benefits of honey:)!

Drink Up! Organic Lemonade Recipe

There is a heat wave and it’s hot outside!   On days like today, when the temperature is well over 100 degrees (I know…it’s flippin’ hot) its super important to stay hydrated.  A few of my readers have asked me for drink ideas and with the sun shining hot like today, it’s the perfect time to share this natural and healthy Organic Lemonade Recipe…drink up!

Organic Lemonade

This recipe is super fast and easy and most importantly all natural!  Just follow these three easy steps.

Juice of 6 large lemons
1/2 cup Agave Nectar
1 Quart Water

Mix all ingredients in a large pitcher.  Chill.  Enjoy!

I use agave nectar because it is a natural sweetener.  It is a 100% organic sweetener that is made from the agave plant.  Fun Fact: Agave plants are also used to make Tequilla.   Agave has a very subtle sweet flavor and can be purchased at Whole Foods, Trader Joes, or in the organic section of your average grocery store.  If you can’t get your hands on agave, replace it with 1/2 cup sugar or 1/2 cup honey.

Mix it Up!  Variations on this Recipe

Adding fresh fruit to this recipe, or any drink, will not only change the flavor, but will also give you a natural sweetness and serving of fruit.  My favorites for lemonades and teas are raspberries, peaches, lemon and lime slices, and blueberries.  You can simply cut up the fruit to float in your glass or you can “muddle” (smash) the fruit at the bottom of your glass to release more flavor and mix into your lemonade.

I also like to freeze lemonade into ice-cube trays to make lemonade ice.  You can do this with any drink, iced tea, fruit juice, or coffee for iced coffee.  As your ice cubes start to melt, your drink will not be watered down like traditional ice cubes can do.  If I feel very fancy, or for special occasions, I love to pop a raspberry or slice of strawberry into each ice-cube before filling with the liquid.  It looks so beautiful floating in a glass!

Another fun way to mix up this recipe is to pour lemonade into freezer pop molds.  These can be purchased at any grocery store and are a great way to stay hydrated on hot day.  You can put large chunks of fresh fruit in them, fill with lemonade and freeze for a natural desert.  You can also fill molds with any natural fruit juice for a healthy treat.  Kids especially love these!
